Ifmc 2005 report
The 18th edition of the Festival was to include the International Competition. Just to refresh the audience’ memory, since 1997 the International Competition is held alternately with the National one within the frameworks of IFMC in Vitebsk. However, in 2005 the legal issues about Culture Center which is the venue of the festival make the board of founders and organizers change planes and so the festival was held without competition at all. There were all other elements, like opening show, the performance program, theoretical and practical master-classes, round tables, discussions, news conferences and, of course, gala-performance at the end. A new status of the Center became clear just several two months later – State institution “Culture&Business Center “Vitebsk”. That’s the place where the next editions of IFMC are to be held. The long and complex procedure of change of legal status made the Directorate of the festival decide not to take risk of holding the International Competition in 2005.
The only prize of the 18th festival, a traditional memorial Evgeny Panfilov prize was granted to Lev Shulman, producer of the project bureau “Tanztrest” of Ekaterinburg center of contemporary art, for the spectacle “Tango go go”.
The evening of November 25 was fully dedicated to 50th anniversary of Master Evgeny Panfilov. This year the “Evgeny Panfilov Ballet” theater from Perm performed in Vitebsk his prominent choreographies, such as “Women. The Year 1945”, “Waltz for the demented” and re-staged work “Cage for parrots”.
It was back in 2001 when Jo Stromgren, choreographer of one of the most wanted dance companies in Europe, “Jo Stromgren Kompany” from Norway, expressed his desire to join IFMC. It took 5 years to arrange this long-awaited meeting. Vitebsk became the last point of the company’s world tour of 2005. “The Hospital”, the last work of Jo Stromgren, make an imperishable impression both on newcomers and the true theater lovers. Actually, the choreography (meaning dancing) as itself took hardly 10 percent of performance. More of that, all three performers, professional dramatic actresses, had never trained in contemporary dance. Nevertheless, it was a great success and a perfect illustration to the expression “Art is not “what”, but “how”. Absurdity of what was happening in the imaginary isolated world was written out so likely and colorable that the spectators probably would not be surprised if it turned out that performers really needed the psychiatrist’s help. This “unusual” for IFMC work made Vitebsk audience acquainted with a worthy sample of contemporary European theater.
The most mentioned name during the festival conclusive gala-concert was Larisa Aleksandrova. She is the author of most of choreographies performed that day (“Tango go go” was among them). Besides, it was the first participation in IFMC of the contemporary dance group “Voices” from Moldova. Their lyrical spectacle “Keep dancing until music stops” left in memory a series of interesting choreographic fragments based on so called “contact improvisation”.
